The Roots & Music of Fridge Magnets

On a lark, Ricko Levine and Mark Freedman brought their guitars to a sun soaked Toronto park on a lunch hour escape from their humdrum jobs. Playing musical “show and tell” with their original songs, one harmony lead to another, a suggested chord change led to a new direction for a song, a lyric was added, a chorus was enhanced. And when they looked up, they were surrounded by folks who were drawn to their tunes and clamouring to own their music. This spark led to four albums, over 10,000 units sold and nearly 300 live performances.

The heart and soul of ICEBOX Music recording artists, Fridge Magnets, is the guitar duo of Toronto based singer/songwriters Rick (Ricko) Levine and Mark Freedman. Invoking the spirit of the great harmony based classic Folk Rock groups (think Simon & Garfunkel, The Eagles and CSNY), Fridge Magnets’ roots music draws on these influences to create relevant, clever and unique songs all their own. Their melodies, harmonies, lyrics and vocals are at once compelling, fresh, and reminiscent, full of both substance and hooks.

Fridge Magnets’ talent has attracted some key Canadian players to their recordings. Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee, (the late) Richard Bell (Janis Joplin/The Band), Grammy award winner Colin Linden, Juno-nominated/ECMA nominated producer, Doug Romanow, Juno Award winning vocalist, Judy Gershon and the frequent Bruce Cockburn rhythm section of John Dymond on bass and drummer Gary Craig.

Highlights from Fridge Magnets career include rotation on EZRock radio stations in Ontario, CBC Metro
Morning with Andy Barrie, Air Canada’s “In Flight Entertainment,” live on CFRB 1010 and most recently, Dollard Radio in The Netherlands and Upper Galilee Radio in Israel. TV appearances include City TV’s Breakfast Television and Rogers Cable 10 “Daytime.”

With nearly 300 performances to date, notable gigs include opening for both Stephen Fearing and Willie P. Bennett at Hugh’s Room, the Canadian Film Centre, Nathan Phillips Square
summer concert series, Toronto “Live With Culture” series, the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, CD release concerts at Clinton’s and Third Floor Riley’s, regular entertainment at Chapters and Indigos stores across the GTA and the legendary Free Times Café in Toronto.
